5 Foods That Naturally Whiten Teeth

healthy-foods

It’s no secret everyone wants their teeth to have that pearly white glow. If you’re interested in whitening your teeth, changing your daily diet to incorporate more teeth-friendly foods will certainly help.

While specific food and drinks can contribute to discolouration and staining, there are several foods that work to naturally whiten your teeth.

1. Carrots

There’s a reason we are always told to eat our vegetables! Not only are carrots packed with nutrients, their crunchy texture stimulates saliva production (the mouth’s natural cleaning agent).

This rids unwanted bacteria while also scrubbing the teeth clean, resulting in whiter teeth. Raw vegetables such as celery, broccoli and cauliflower will also have the same effect.

2. Strawberries

It may surprise some to learn strawberries are one of the top fruits to munch on to achieve whiter teeth. Despite their tendency to leave red stains on clothing, strawberries contain an enzyme called malic acid that works to naturally whiten teeth enamel.

3. Hard Cheeses

While any quality dairy products will help protect teeth against decay, hard cheese is a natural whitening winner. Their tough exterior increases saliva, therefore removing bacteria and food particles from the tooth’s enamel.

If hard cheeses aren’t your favourite, dairy products such as yoghurt and milk are rich in lactic acid, protein, calcium and phosphorus which all work to make the enamel stronger.

4. Pineapple

Pineapples contain an enzyme called bromelain, which has been proven to be a natural stain remover for teeth. It also works to break up plaque, which can lead to enamel erosion if left untreated.

5. Sesame Seeds

Sesame seeds are the perfect teeth-friendly snacks to munch on if you want to cut back on stain-inducing foods. The chewing motion needed to consume sesame seeds results in gently scrubbing plague and stains off the teeth surface. They also contain calcium which aids in strengthening teeth and bones.

Some of these are also the best foods for keeping your teeth healthy, as well as sparkling white!
