What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical procedure providing a great range of benefits to the skin while causing little or no downtime to the client. It has been scientifically and histologically proven to improve the appearance of the stratum corneum and the integrity of the underlying skin layers.
The truest definition of microdermabrasion is “polishing” of the skin – specifically the stratum corneum and the stratum granulosum. The process involves using a diamond encrusted tip or firing fine aluminium oxide crystals through a hand piece with the skin under vacuum. The crystals strike the skin, exfoliating the surface and are then being vacuumed back into a disposable canister with the dead skin cells.
The procedure is based on the concept of “sanding” the skin to improve its appearance and while it takes its origins from older surgical resurfacing procedures such as dermabrasion, it is a superficial treatment that requires no anaesthesia, has low complication rates, rapid and predictable results across a broad number of indications, low discomfort and high levels of safety – making it a preferred monthly treatment in multi-faceted treatment plans.
The most common, expected and visible result a client will see after a microdermabrasion is a deep exfoliation that leaves the skin healthier and refreshed due to the removal of older, drier, dead skin cells – speeding up the process of surface sloughing.
True dermabrasion is not used very much anymore due to high incidence of post-procedure hypopigmentation and scarring.
Microdermabrasion traditionally used fine crystal particles “blasting” across the skin to remove the surface layers. These days, diamond tips literally sand the layer free while a vacuum ensures tight contact with the skin at all times and removes debris and skin particles back to the machine. Usually 2 passes across an area are sufficient to remove the stratum corneum.
