How does it work?
Botulinum Toxin A is injected into specific areas to relax the underlying muscle. This can help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and also counteract muscles which are pulling down on our face giving a more lifted appearance. The injections can be done in a half an hour appointment. The effects take up to two weeks to be seen and will last on average 3-4months. There are several brands of products which can be used, speak to your clinician should you wish to request a specific brand. Results will NOT be seen immediately after treatment, it takes 2 weeks for the dosage to have full effect.
How to prepare for your injectables appointment?
When planning your appointment you should come makeup free and clean faced. There are some things that you can do to reduce your risk of bruising. Ideally avoid exercise that morning, as well as alcohol 48hrs prior. Blood thinning medications can increase your risk of bruising (if this is prescribed by a doctor, check with your doctor prior to pausing medications). Consider any supplements that you take as these can also increase risk of bruising, for example fish oil, garlic. It is important to share any medical conditions or allergies with your treating clinician. Pregnant or breastfeeding women will need to defer treatment. It is advised to be generally well when undertaking any injectables treatment.
After your injectables appointment
It is important to follow after care instructions carefully to minimise your chance of complications. Important to note is to avoid the following:
- touching the area for the rest of the day (normal skin care is fine in the evening)
- laying down for 5hrs to avoid pressure in injection sites
- exercise for 24hrs
- alcohol for 24hrs
- excessive heat, such as saunas or spas for 24hrs
- placing any pressure (such as massage or facials) 24hrs
At your injectables appointment
After a thorough discussion of treatment goals we will provide an assessment of your current concerns and make recommendations of what can be achieved. Photo records will be made for diagnosis. After the risks and benefits are discussed you may then choose to proceed with treatment.
