If you’re in need of straighter teeth, you’ve likely heard of Invisalign. Invisalign has had a huge positive impact on the world of teeth alignment, offering a clear, more comfortable alternative to traditional wire braces.
While you may be familiar with Invisalign, you may have questions about how the treatment works, what you can expect, and how the process may feel.
At Oasis Dental Studio, we offer personalised Invisalign treatments and a thorough consultation process to help you feel prepared. If you’d like to learn more or book a consultation, you are welcome to contact our team at either our Gold Coast, Brisbane, or Pottsville clinics.
Question 1: How is Invisalign different from traditional wire braces?
While traditional braces, which are made with wire fixtures, aren’t removable during the treatment process, Invisalign uses a set of clear removable aligners.
Apart from the clear appearance and smooth texture, a benefit of having the treatment over wire braces is being able to remove the aligners for meals, special occasions, or brushing.
Question 2: How does Invisalign work?
If the aligners can be removed during the treatment, how do they work to change the alignment of your teeth?
Essentially, the treatment uses a set of multiple aligners designed to be worn in a series. Each set of aligners must be worn for a certain duration of time, slowly pushing the teeth into place, before moving on to the next aligner.
While traditional braces need to be adjusted, Invisalign simply requires you to move on to the next custom-designed piece.
Typically, you’ll need to wear each set of aligners for about one to two weeks before switching to the next set, but it will depend on your personal needs and how well your teeth are shifting.
Overall, the treatment works by applying precise, controlled pressure to move your teeth into their new positions.
Question 3: Do I have to wear the aligners 24/7?
Unlike traditional braces that are fixed in place, you won’t need to keep the aligners in 24/7 with Invisalign. However, for Invisalign to work effectively, you do need to wear your aligners for about 20 to 22 hours per day. If you don’t wear them as directed, your treatment could take longer, so consistency and carefully following your treatment plan will be key.
To make sure that you wear them most of the time, you’ll need to keep them in while you sleep, and during most of the day. The removability of the aligners should be reserved for removing them to eat, drink anything besides water, brush, floss or move to the next set in the series.
Question 4: Am I the right candidate for Invisalign?
Invisalign can address a variety of orthodontic issues, from mild spacing problems to more complex alignment concerns. However, more significant alignment issues may sometimes require traditional braces or other treatments.
To be suitable for the treatment, you should also have good general dental health, including healthy gums. Sometimes, we instruct candidates to undergo treatments before considering Invisalign, to address any other issues first.
A consultation is the best and most accurate way to determine whether you’re suitable for Invisalign.
Question 5: Does Invisalign hurt or feel uncomfortable?
Compared to braces, Invisalign aligners are known for being much more comfortable. The smooth plastic material eliminates the risk of cuts or sores that metal wires and brackets can cause.
That being said, it’s normal to feel some pressure or tightness when you first switch to a new set of aligners. However, this is a sign that they’re working as intended, and any discomfort typically subsides after a day or two as you adjust to the change in pressure.
When you first start wearing Invisalign, it’s also completely normal to notice a slight lisp, or change in the way you speak. As you get used to wearing the aligners and begin to feel more comfortable, these changes should subside.
Question 6: How do I keep my aligners clean?
Keeping your aligners clean will be essential for avoiding stains, preventing bad odours and maintaining your oral health throughout the treatment process. Luckily, it is quite simple to keep them clean.
To clean your aligners, simply rinse them with lukewarm water every time you take them out. Make sure to use warm water instead of hot water, as it can affect the shape of the aligners. You should also brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and clear, unscented soap or a special Invisalign cleaning solution.
Question 7: What happens if I lose an aligner?
While we recommend keeping your aligners in a safe and convenient place, mistakes can happen! If you do lose an aligner during the treatment process, it’s fixable.
When you notice your aligner is missing, please get in touch with our team. We can advise you on the steps to take, whether it’s simply moving onto the next set, or wearing your previous set, until a replacement can be made.
The most important thing to do if you do lose an aligner is to contact us as soon as possible, as waiting too long can delay your overall treatment.
Question 8: How long does the total process take?
Invisalign needs to be tailored to your individual dental needs, so the total treatment time can vary per person.
For some people, Invisalign may take as little as six months, while others might need closer to 18 months. On average, most treatments last about 12 months.
Carefully following the treatment plan and following all of the essential steps to stay on track, including wearing your aligners for the recommended 20 to 22 hours per day and attending check-up appointments, can make your treatment as efficient as possible.
