April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and as your trusted dental clinic, Oasis Dental Studio is here to help you learn more about this disease. Oral cancer is a type of cancer that affects the mouth and throat, and it can be life-threatening if not detected early. There are approximately 2500 new cases of oral and pharyngeal cancer registered in Australia each year.

Here’s what you need to know about oral cancer and how to stay informed.

What is oral cancer?

Oral cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the tissues of the mouth or throat. It can occur in any part of the mouth, including the lips, gums, tongue, inner cheeks, roof or floor of the mouth, or throat. Oral cancer can spread quickly to other parts of the body if not detected early, making it crucial to get regular oral cancer screenings.

The symptoms of oral cancer may include:

  • A sore that does not heal
  • Red or white patches in the mouth
  • Pain or difficulty swallowing
  • A lump or thickening in the cheek
  • A persistent sore throat
  • Numbness in the tongue or other parts of the mouth
  • A change in the way your teeth fit together

Who is at risk for oral cancer?

  • Tobacco users, including cigarettes, cigars, vapes, and chewing tobacco
  • Those who consume alcohol heavily
  • People who may be exposed to the human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • If you have a  weakened immune system
  • If you have a family history of oral cancer

There are several steps you can take to lower your risk of oral cancer, including:

  • Quit smoking or using tobacco products
  • Reducing your alcohol consumption
  • Eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables
  • Getting regular dental check-ups and screenings

At Oasis Dental Studios our dentists are trained to screen your mouth for early signs of cancer. Our five practices include Broadbeach, Palm Beach, Chirn Park, Pottsville and West End and are set up with excellent lighting which makes it possible to see every part of the oral cavity.
